Provides spiritual care services under general supervision to persons in the Hospital. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
- Provides Roman Catholic ministry to persons in St. Luke’s and St. Luke’s Des Peres Hospitals, Surrey Place, and St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Hospital in terms of spiritual visitation, liturgical services,
and sacraments, as well as spiritual care to persons of all faith traditions. Completes and charts spiritual assessments, care plans, and progress notes in the electronic medical record.
- Serves on-call for Roman Catholic sacramental ministries 24/7 on workdays/work holidays.
- Celebrates Mass on Sundays, Holy Days, and twice during the work week at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield and one day per week at St. Luke’s Surrey Place. Assists in the planning and implementation of special liturgies and worship services, such as Advent, Christmas, Lenten Season, Easter and other Holy Days.
- Provides guidance/direction for Volunteer Lay Eucharistic Ministers.
- Serves as a resource to St. Luke’s Spiritual Care Services by presenting seminars and programs and serving on the Professional Consultation Committee as needed.
- Participates in various hospital programs and committees, such as the Ethics Committee and Complex Illness Management, represents the Hospital in community and denominational events, and assists in the Spiritual Care Office, as needed.
- Networks with clergy in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese as well as other clergy and community faith communities as needed.
- Provide competent care for individuals in their specific age groups, including neonate/infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. The spiritual assessment/care plan, and spiritual care provided by the Roman Catholic Priest Chaplain will be consistent with the patient’s specific age-related needs.
- Establish and maintain spiritual care relationships; work in situations of high stress and emotional conflict; receive and maintain personal and professional confidences.
- Performs other work duties as assigned.
Works in various areas of the St. Luke’s network of healthcare services. Employee is required to sit occasionally and walk frequently when performing job duties. Uses computer, telephone, pager, DVD’s, and CD’s frequently. Employee may need to lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.) load occasionally. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. Employee may occasionally be required to do simple grasping and pushing/pulling.

The most significant of duties are included, but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties.
Completion of undergraduate degree;
Master of Divinity degree from a seminary accredited by the American Association of Theological Schools required.
Proof of ordination as priest, good standing, and endorsement to hospital ministry by the Archdiocese of St. Louis required.
Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education, board certification as chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or (APC) preferred, or with 3–5-year completion plan for completing 4 units of CPE and becoming board certified.
