POSITION SUMMARY:
The Superintendent leads the Secretariat for Catholic Schools in the Catholic Diocese of Lexington and is appointed by the Bishop. The Superintendent facilitates the Catholic schools working together as a system. He/she is a spokesperson and an advocate for all Catholic schools within the diocese. In addition, he/she provides leadership in all areas of teaching and learning including Catholic identity, curriculum, data analysis, and professional development. He/she facilitates the Catholic schools working together as a system. He/she directs, guides, and counsels every member of the administrative, instructional, and programs and operating systems. He/she is also responsible for a system of school supervision, including system accreditation, and evaluation for all staff designed to meet the goals for schools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The criteria for performing the job responsibilities of the Superintendent include the ability to function effectively in the following categories:
1. Catholic identity
a. Ensure that Catholic schools in the diocese promote the principles and teachings of the Catholic church.
b. Collaborate with local school leaders to create and provide excellent academic opportunities to all children, especially to underserved communities.
c. Establish and maintain good relations with pastors, administrators and local councils.
2. Educational Leadership
a. Teach and support the mission of Catholic schools within the diocese to include Catholic identity.
b. Facilitate the development and implementation of a collaborative effort to seek fulfillment and refinement of the Catholic vision, identity, mission, and beliefs.
c. Support policy and work for constructive change.
d. Communicate the Catholic vision, identity, mission, and beliefs standards effectively to all stakeholders.
e. Demonstrate knowledge of developments and trends in K-12 education.
f. Ensure that policies, procedures and school rules promote a safe, respectful, and healthy school environment.
g. Communicate effectively with the school councils, staff, students and community about educational trends, curriculum needs and instructional programs.
h. Ensure that administrators and teachers communicate student progress and school curricula to parents.
i. Administer the development, implementation, and assessment of educational programs consistent with state and federal standards.
j. Conduct reviews of the total school program, and advise the school principals on recommendations for the educational advancement of the schools.
k. Recommend to the school committee the timely revision and adoption of courses of
study, curriculum, teaching materials, etc.
3. Communication
a. Ensure meetings of administrators, teachers and other staff members are conducted as necessary for the discussion of matters concerning the improvement and welfare of the schools.
b. Communicate to all staff members actions on the Diocesan level that reflect a change in school policies or procedures.
c. Confer as needed with professional and lay groups concerning the school program and transmit suggestions to the appropriate school councils and others.
d. Communicate the Catholic vision, identity, mission and belief standards effectively to all stakeholders, employing a variety of means to inform, commend, recommend, thank, inquire, and respond in a proactive manner.
e. Communicate with and understand the needs and perspectives of various community groups.
4. Staffing
a. Implement the Catholic Schools Teachers Evaluation system for all staff.
b. Foster an environment that encourages continuous learning and improvement on the part of school staff.
c. Ensure protocols are in place to develop and implement an effective system of staff development focused on improving the educational and operational programs for each of the schools in collaboration with the school councils and administration.
d. Advocate for staff to participate in conferences, visitations and coursework within the framework of the school system’s budget.
e. Ensure that job descriptions for all staff are developed, remain current, and serve as a basis for the evaluation of all school personnel.
5. Financial Management
a. Demonstrate the ability to perform effective financial forecasting and long and short-term financial planning.
b. Ensure financial procedures and accounts are maintained and that audits are performed on an annual basis. Further, communicate any audit findings by a third-party to the school councils with recommendations for corrective action.
6. Operational and Facilities Management
a. File, or cause to be filed, all reports required by state and federal laws/regulations.
b. Model for all school personnel the use of data to make well-informed decisions.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Other duties as assigned by the Bishop.
CRITICAL SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be a practicing Catholic with a strong knowledge of and commitment to the philosophy of Catholic education.
2. Teaching and administrative experience in a Catholic school system preferred.
3. Advanced degree in education and administration.
4. Experience as a supervisor or manager.
5. Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels within the school system.
6. Must possess proficient technology skills to include Microsoft Office applications.
7. Strong skills in and demonstrated track record with conflict management and resolution.
MINISTERIAL DUTIES:
This position is appointed by the Bishop and serves as a representative of the Bishop in all school matters.
