Job TITLE: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Reports to: PRINCIPAL
INDIRECT REPORTS TO: ECSS PRESIDENT AND VP OF ACADEMICS
position status: FULL TIME, Exempt
Position Summary:
The Assistant Principal serves as an instructional and spiritual leader within the school community. This role assists the Principal in the daily administration of the school, supports faculty and students, ensures a safe and faith-filled learning environment, and promotes high standards of academic achievement and Catholic identity. The Assistant Principal helps integrate faith into all aspects of school life while maintaining effective operations and a positive school culture.
Detailed job divisions, outlining focus and direct responsibility, between the Principal and Assistant Principal will be confirmed at the start of each academic year.
Required Qualifications:
· Valid and active Pennsylvania Administrative Certificate or ability to obtain certification. (Applications from out of state candidates within one year of completion will also be considered.)
· Master’s degree with graduate work in curriculum, instruction, supervision, or another related field.
· Practicing Catholic.
· Demonstrated adherence to the highest moral standards.
· Committed to the ECSS mission, vision, and philosophy.
Desired Qualifications:
· Experience leading and managing multi-dimensional organizations and situations.
· Experience using data to make informed decisions about student achievement and other data driven needs.
· Experience conducting informal and formal observations of teachers.
· Five years of experience as a teacher or administrator in a Catholic school preferred.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: School Operations
· Responsible for school operations when the principal is not in the building.
· Support daily school management, including scheduling, supervision, and event coordination.
· Ensure a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for all members of the community.
· Encourage collaboration among faculty and promote a professional learning community.
· Assist in implementing school policies and procedures.
· Assist in emergency preparedness and implementation of safety protocols.
· Assist in onboarding and mentoring of new teachers.
· Indirectly responsible for student enrollment.
· The Assistant Principal may be assigned teaching responsibilities based on the needs/requirements of the school. This would not equate to more than 50% of a regular teaching schedule.
Leadership for Learning – Educational Leadership
· Assist in supervising curriculum implementation and instructional practices.
· Support teachers through coaching, observation, and professional feedback.
· Monitor student achievement data and collaborate on strategies for improvement.
· Serve as a resource to teachers for instructional planning, classroom management, and student support.
· Set high expectations for faculty and students.
· Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, school community, and the other system and diocesan schools to ensure that education focuses on the whole person - the physical, moral, social, and intellectual talents of each student.
Professional and Community Leadership
· Act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
· Promote parent/guardian involvement.
· Promote and support professional development.
· Collaborate with the principal to develop agendas for faculty and/or staff meetings.
Student Life and Discipline
· Oversee student conduct in a manner consistent with restorative practices and Catholic values.
· Work with students, parents, and faculty to address behavioral concerns constructively.
· Promote a positive school climate that emphasizes dignity, responsibility, and accountability.
· Assist with attendance, student supervision, and school-wide expectations.
Mission and Catholic Identity Leadership
· Ensure that the school addresses the development of student skills in the four areas of evangelization, education, worship, and socialization.
· Collaborate with the System Chaplain and the Director of Campus Ministry to ensure that the Religion curriculum, instruction, and Religion teachers meet standards set by the Diocese of Erie.
· Collaborate with the System Chaplain and the Director of Campus Ministry to ensure that students, faculty, and staff have regular opportunities for faith formation, participation in liturgy, communal prayer, and service projects that support Catholic values and diocesan approved agencies and efforts.
Competencies:
· Knowledge of the teachings of the Catholic Church.
· Knowledge of child and adolescent development, learning, and behavior.
· Knowledge of the ECSS PreK-8 Curriculum and the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools.
· Knowledge of evidenced-based instructional methods and assessment strategies.
· Knowledge of effective assessment methods, data management, and school data interpretation.
· Skill in active listening and communicating effectively orally and in writing, utilizing a variety of communication tools and techniques.
· Skill in recognizing, employing, and evaluating evidenced-based instructional methods and assessment strategies.
· Skill in completing teacher and staff professional observations and conducting follow-up meetings to discuss observation ratings and comments.
· Skill in conducting student, teacher, and/or parent conferences.
· Skill in leading collaborative work teams and working collaboratively with individuals across the system.
· Skill in organizational and time management. Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
· Skill in critical thinking, problem solving, and strategic planning.
· Skill employing job-appropriate technologies and integration of instructional technologies.
Work Conditions:
· Required to work in a school environment, including a professional office environment.
· Required to work some evenings and weekends.
· Required travel among school campuses, parishes, and sites outside of the Erie area necessitates the incumbent to have a vehicle and valid driver’s license to attend job related meetings, seminars, and professional development.
· Required to manage all levels of stress.
· All Erie Catholic positions require on-campus attendance; remote work and flexible scheduling options are not offered.
