POSITION TITLE: Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina seeks a dynamic Catholic
Christian, preferably fluent in Spanish and English, desiring to share the Word of God and the Christian
Faith with youth and adults, overseeing the ministry of catechesis and evangelization. This full-time
position serves a 2400+ faith family with a growing Hispanic membership (currently on two campuses).
While focusing on religious education for youth and those preparing to receive the Sacraments of
Initiation, this person supervises all ministries under this charism of evangelism and faith formation.
POSITION SUMMARY:
While this role will focus on the religious education and sacramental preparation of our youth, the
Directorwill oversee all ministries that pertain to evangelization and faith formation. This includes OCIC
(f0r older youth who did not receive their sacraments when younger); OCIA/OICA (Spanish) for adults
becoming Catholic Christians orpursuingtheotherSacramentsofInitiation;Hispanicministries to ensure
that we assist Hispanics get caught up on their catechesis and faith formation; Bible studyprograms; any
parish missions and/or retreats; the youth ministry and young adult ministry programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation is required to:
• Organize and distribute student and family materials
• Ensure materials are translated for Hispanic families
• Track class and Mass attendance
• Prepare and distribute any communication to youth and parents
• Ensure all grade levels are properly staffed with catechists with the level of knowledge to teach
• Supervise classroom management
• Serve as the liaison with the pastor, parish staff, and families
• Receive and log documentation (sacramental records)
• Collaborate with other ministers within the Department of Evangelization and Faith Formation
as well as other organizations of the parish
• Facilitate the recruitment, development, and evaluation of volunteers, ensuring that all
volunteers are SAFE HAVEN-trained and are have been background-screened and approved
• Develop the catechists and other volunteers within the Department of Evangelization and Faith
Formation, finding and implementing programs that are orthodox and in accord with Catholic
Church teaching
• Develop a systematic and intentional plan for continuing formation that utilizes a creative variety
of formats, settings, and time frames
• Provide and utilize resources (print, video, web, other social media) for effective programming
• Ensure that all adults and youth are trained to be in leadership positions
• Foster the involvement of young people in the parish’s life, including serving in parish activities
• Plan Confirmation and First Holy Communion preparation, practices, and Masses, ensuring that
candidates are well-prepared and properly disposed to receive these sacraments
• Assist parents to be better first teachers of faith to their children
• Assist the Coordinator of Youth Ministry in the comprehensive vision of youth ministry, based on
the 1997 USCCB document, Renewing The Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry
• Serve as the liaison with the Diocesan Offices of Youth, Hispanic ministry, and Faith Formation,
cooperating with their programs, services, and resources

QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, or related field, knowledge of Catholic
teachings, catechesis and documents on youth ministry.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
With a growing Hispanic population, candidates for the Dir. of Evangelization and Faith Formation must
be fluent in Spanish and English with strong verbal and written communication skills; proficient in writing
reports,letters,e-newsletters,flyers,andotherdocuments in English and Spanish; capable of developing
and executing programs for youth, adults, and families, Hispanic ministry events, and support
sacramental preparation meetings: ability to read and understand Church documents and guidelines.
COMPUTATIONAL SKILLS:
Ability to read, prepare, and manage budgets for major events and programs; prepare
annual budget for areas of ministry under the religious education department
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve problems, make sound decisions, and deal with a variety of variables.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Microsoft Office
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to transport materials and
equipment (up to 50 pounds) to/from various locations. The employee often sits forlengthy periods of
time, uses hands in repetitive tasks, handles objects, talks and hears. Specific vision abilities required
include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
The employee works in an individual office within the parish office. The noise level varies depending on
the activities in the parish office. The employee also works off-site at times for various ministry events,
such as retreat centers, supervising, and directing those events.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee needs to be physically present in the office to complete office tasks but will conduct work
out of the office; to be available to work outside of regular business hours as needed; to check in with
and provide calendarto parish staff. The employee must be able to work cooperatively with other staff
members as well as other ministers and volunteers. The employee must be able to multitask.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The employee must have knowledge of Church structure and culture. The employee must have
knowledge of current youth culture, current trends, and issues within those cultures. Similarly, being
familiar if not immersed in the Hispanic culture is necessary for the person to have credibility with and
ability to serve as the liaison between the Hispanic community and the pastor. The ability to maintain
confidentiality is critical alongside the ability to discern when confidentiality must be balanced with other
requirements.
