Summerville Catholic School: Music Teacher
Position Summary
Summerville Catholic School seeks a passionate and faith-filled Music Teacher to provide
high-quality music instruction for K3 through 8th grade and lead Singing Saints, the school choir.
This position is responsible for fostering musical skills, creativity, and an appreciation for sacred
and secular music while supporting the spiritual formation of students. The Music Teacher plays
an integral role in the liturgical and cultural life of the school by integrating faith, music, and
performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Music Instruction
● Provide general music instruction to students in accordance with diocesan and school
curriculum standards
● Teach foundational music skills, including rhythm, melody, vocal technique, music theory,
and appreciation
● Design engaging, age-appropriate lessons that encourage participation and musical
growth
● Assess student progress and maintain appropriate instructional records
Choir Leadership – Singing Saints
● Direct and oversee Singing Saints, the Summerville Catholic School choir
● Select appropriate sacred and secular repertoire that reflects Catholic identity and school
values
● Prepare students for performances, school events, concerts, and liturgical celebrations
● Develop students’ vocal skills, confidence, and ensemble performance techniques
Faith & Liturgical Support
● Support the Catholic mission of the school through music and worship
● Collaborate with administration and campus ministry to support Masses, prayer services,
and special liturgical events
● Model reverence, professionalism, and Gospel-centered values through music
instruction
Classroom Environment
● Maintain a safe, structured, and respectful learning environment
● Establish clear expectations for student behavior and participation
● Encourage teamwork, discipline, and respect through musical collaboration
Communication & Collaboration
● Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding choir participation,
performances, and expectations
● Collaborate with faculty and staff to support school-wide programs and events
● Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school activities
Professional Responsibilities
● Uphold school policies, diocesan guidelines, and professional standards
● Engage in ongoing professional growth in music education and faith formation
● Perform additional duties as assigned by the administration
Qualifications
Required
● Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field (or equivalent
experience)
● Experience working with children in a music or educational setting
● Commitment to the mission and values of Catholic education
Preferred
● Experience directing a children’s or school choir
● Ability to accompany students vocally or instrumentally
Work Environment
This position requires the ability to lead vocal and movement-based activities, stand for
extended periods, and attend rehearsals and performances outside regular school hours as
needed
