Position Description:
Fosters strong collaboration among leaders of the six Catholic schools in the Diocese of
Cheyenne, located in Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette, Riverton, Rock Springs, and Sheridan,
serving approximately 800 students. On behalf of the Bishop, oversees Catholic Schools in
accord with Canon 796-806. Supports principals and school leaders in deepening Catholic
mission and identity, advancing professional growth, and strengthening the ongoing
formation of school boards. In support of these shared priorities, collaborates closely with
the Bishop through an active and trusting relationship with the Diocesan Catholic Schools
Council.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and Abilities:
● In-depth knowledge of the Catholic faith.
● Thorough knowledge and experience of Catholic school education, mission, and
purpose.
● Extensive knowledge and experience in school leadership: administration,
governance, fiscal responsibility, supervising personnel, visioning, etc.
● Working knowledge of canon law, Wyoming and Federal laws and regulations for
schools.
● Capacity to collaborate well with school leadership (principals, Boards, etc.),
clergy, diocesan and parish personnel, and the public.
● Able to maintain strict confidentiality — discussing school or church business only
with the person(s) necessary to fulfill responsibilities.
● Understanding of the rural nature of the diocese and willing to sustain weekly
interaction with school leadership.
● Managerial, supervisory, training, and performance evaluation skills.
● Excellent decision-making skills, the ability to cope with considerable stress, and the
capacity to multi-task.
● Excellent interpersonal, electronic, and written communication skills.
● Able to be a self-starter, work independently, determine priorities and direction.
Degrees, Licenses, and Certification:
● M.A., M.Ed., MCSL
● Ph.D. or Ed.D., preferred.
● Engage regularly in ongoing faith formation and remain open and receptive to
continued growth opportunities.
Experience:
● Five years of experience in Catholic education.
● Five years of experience serving as a school principal or in district- or diocesan-level
leadership.
● Experience working collaboratively with school boards and/or advisory councils.
● Understanding of how to apply current research on instructional best practices to
strengthen religious instruction and faith formation.
● Experience supporting advancement and philanthropic initiatives

● A fully initiated, practicing Catholic, free from any canonical penalties, and
recognized for proven faith, good morals, and a good reputation.

Key Responsibility Areas:
KRA 1 | Identify and Sustain Common Elements of Catholic Mission and Identity
across Catholic Schools
Leads and coordinates diocesan efforts to define, sustain, and advance common elements of
Catholic Mission and Identity across Catholic schools. Collaborates closely with the Bishop,
the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council (DCSC), the Director of Pastoral Formation, school
leaders, and key stakeholders to establish shared expectations and resources, and provides
ongoing oversight and support for faithful implementation across schools.
● With input from school leaders and the DCSC, articulates and maintains a clear
diocesan vision for Catholic education that defines the spiritual, academic, and
personal outcomes the diocese seeks for students formed through its schools.
● Ensures this shared vision functions as a guiding framework for schools, informing
curriculum, culture, formation, and decision-making while remaining responsive to
the needs of local communities.
● Identifies, develops, curates, and sustains diocesan resources that support schools in
translating this shared vision into effective local practice.
● Oversees and supports the formation of school leaders in the local implementation of
the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and
Secondary Schools (NSBECS).
● Conducts annual sponsorship reviews that affirm schools’ connection to the Bishop’s
leadership and assess alignment with Diocese of Cheyenne standards and the National
Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools
(NSBECS).
● Leads and coordinates diocese-wide initiatives to promote Catholic schools, including
Catholic Schools Week, strengthening visibility, enrollment, and community
engagement.
● Supports schools in the development and delivery of ongoing spiritual formation
opportunities for faculty and staff, fostering faith-filled leadership and professional
growth.
● In coordination with key diocesan staff and the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB), establishes and maintains standards for religious instruction in
Catholic schools and supports faithful and effective local implementation.
KRA 2 | Coordinate and Provide Formation for Leadership of Schools in Mission,
Governance, and Operational Vitality
Provides leadership, guidance, and accompaniment to support the formation, governance
effectiveness, and operational vitality of Catholic schools with boards of directors. In collaboration
with diocesan leadership, the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council (DCSC), and partners, offers
resources and formation that strengthen governance practices, Catholic identity, and long-term
sustainability.
● Identifies and shares formation resources that strengthen board members’ capacity to fulfill
fiduciary, strategic, and mission responsibilities.
● Collaborates regularly with the Executive Director of Human Resources on matters related
to principal selection, evaluation, and human resource issues impacting Catholic schools,
ensuring alignment with diocesan policies and practices.
● Plans and coordinates an annual retreat for boards of directors that integrates governance
formation, spiritual reflection, and faith formation.
● Provides annual updates for boards on school law, governance responsibilities, and best
practices.
● Supports boards in establishing and implementing effective processes and tools for
principal selection and performance evaluation.
● Supports boards in establishing and maintaining onboarding materials and orientation
processes for new board members.
● Supports boards in sustaining Catholic identity through the use of the National Standards
and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) or
other appropriate Catholic assessment tools.
KRA 3 | Provide Support for Schools to Achieve Academic Excellence
Provides leadership, coordination, and oversight for diocesan efforts that support academic
excellence across Catholic schools. Through structured formation, professional learning, and
individualized accompaniment, ensures principals are equipped to lead faithfully, effectively, and
in alignment with diocesan priorities.
● Identifies, designs, and implements an annual professional development experience for
Catholic school leaders, including determining content priorities, identifying presenters,
and coordinating logistics.
● Facilitates system-wide remote gatherings throughout the academic year to extend learning,
foster collaboration, and maintain alignment with diocesan priorities.
● Provides individualized leadership coaching and accompaniment, including site visits and
ongoing consultation, to support principals’ professional growth and progress toward
schoolwide goals.
● Serves as the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) Commissioner,
supporting schools in achieving and maintaining accreditation.
● Collaborates with principals and boards to identify teacher leaders and emerging leaders
and to support distributive leadership development within schools.
● Conducts school visits to support principals in the implementation of major initiatives and
shared diocesan priorities.
● Provides or coordinates professional development opportunities for school leaders and
teachers and facilitates sessions as appropriate.
● Develops, maintains, and updates common diocesan resources—including handbooks,
contracts, best-practice guides, tools, templates, and other shared materials—to support
effective and mission-aligned school operations.
KRA 4 | Ongoing Formation of the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council
Provides leadership, formation, and ongoing support to the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council
(DCSC) to ensure informed advisement and effective service to Catholic schools across the
Diocese of Cheyenne.
● Serves as a primary resource to the DCSC and its committees, providing context,
formation, and strategic insight related to Catholic school mission, leadership,
governance, and sustainability.
● Provides timely, actionable information, data, and artifacts to the Council, its
committees, and individual members to support informed dialogue, discernment, and
decision-making.
● Prepares and presents an annual report to the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council,
based on data provided by schools, which affirms schools’ connection to the Bishop’s
leadership and evaluates alignment with Diocese of Cheyenne standards and the
National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and
Secondary Schools (NSBECS).
● Provides updates at each Council meeting regarding the strategic work of the role, as
well as school successes, needs, and emerging concerns, ensuring transparency and
alignment.
● Through participation in the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA),
connects Council members and committees to relevant national resources that support
formation, learning, and effective governance.
KRA 5 |Provide Strategic Guidance and Support to School Leadership
Provides strategic guidance, consultation, and accompaniment to principals and boards when
complex situations arise that require expertise, discernment, or resources beyond those available at
the local level. This support includes offering professional counsel, identifying and sharing
appropriate resources, and facilitating connections with chancery staff and relevant professionals.
● Advises and supports principals in navigating unforeseen challenges or issues that fall
outside their scope of training or experience, helping leaders assess situations, identify
options, and take appropriate action aligned with diocesan expectations and Catholic
mission.
● Serves as a resource to boards during complex situations or crises that require specialized
guidance, coordination, or collaboration with diocesan leadership and external
professionals, ensuring thoughtful, mission-aligned decision-making.
KRA 6 | Advance Financial Sustainability and Philanthropic Support for Catholic Schools
Supports diocesan and system-wide advancement efforts by identifying and advancing funding
priorities that strengthen the collective mission, sustainability, and impact of Catholic schools
across the Diocese of Cheyenne. In collaboration with the Diocesan Catholic Schools Council
(DCSC), the Wyoming Catholic Ministries Foundation, diocesan leadership, and school leaders,
contributes to coordinated philanthropic strategies that respond to system-level needs and elevate
Catholic education throughout the diocese.
● Collaborates with the Wyoming Catholic Ministries Foundation to align fundraising
strategies with diocesan priorities and the evolving needs of Catholic schools.
● Assists in donor cultivation and stewardship efforts by helping articulate compelling
school-based and system-wide narratives that reflect the impact and mission of Catholic
education.
● Supports the identification and advancement of strategic funding priorities that elevate
schools, strengthen academic excellence, and sustain Catholic identity.
● Monitors state and national school choice legislation and related funding opportunities
impacting Catholic schools, and communicates timely, clear, and actionable information to
principals and boards to support informed planning and decision-making.
