Brief Job Description: The Director of Discipleship is the leadership position that coordinates and facilitates the faith formation programs for adults; preparation for the sacraments of Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation, and the Religious Education Program for grades K-12.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Using existing programs as a base, lead implementation of the Year One Goals contained in the Forming Disciples for the Future Document prepared by the Forming Disciples Pillar
• Structure a Faith Formation Team consisting of at least one Key Person/Coordinator of Faith Formation from each parish: Blessed Trinity, Ss. Columba-Brigid and St. Martin de Porres.
o A Key Person/Coordinator of Faith Formation is a parish employee or committed volunteer interested in being an integral part of the implementation of the Family Faith Formation Program
o Each Key Person/Coordinator of Faith Formation will find one to three people to help in the areas of Religious Education for grades K-8, Religious Education for grades 9-12, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, Adult Faith Formation and the formation and training of adult volunteers.
• Hold monthly meetings of the Faith Formation Team to discuss ongoing progress.
• Co-ordinate programs of Sacramental Preparation with the Key Persons/Coordinators of Faith Formation from each parish. The Key Persons/Directors of Faith Formation are responsible to identify and enroll students in the following programs, as appropriate:
o Baptism
o First Reconciliation
o First Communion
• Confirmation
• Middle School/High School/Youth Ministry/Scouting
o Provide encouragement and support to Religious Education for grades 8-12
o Explore other opportunities for youth ministry, including Scouting, for example
o Provide oversight, direction and support to the volunteer Youth Minister being put in place in Family 21 as of March 2026
• Work with Administrators/Pastors and Faith Formation Team to grow program for Youth Ministry including Middle School Youth Ministry for grades 5-7.
• Plan, implement and evaluate Adult Education Program
• Keep parishioners informed through bulletin announcements, text messages and social media
• Manage OCIA and OCIC programs
• Facilitate the education of non-cleric catechists
• Manage compliance with Diocesan Safe Environment Program
• Certification and Record Keeping
• Participate in Spiritual Life, Liturgy, InReach/OutReach and Forming Disciples Pillar Meetings
Qualifications: Required Education/Experience:
• Be a practicing and engaged Catholic with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Education, Theology, or related areas (such as education, social work, and/or counseling), and/or certification from an approved course in religious education, and/or a minimum of five years successful experience in parish and/or diocesan work; completion of or working toward the Foundational Parish Catechetical Leadership Certification provided by the Diocese of Buffalo free of charge.
• Work flexible hours depending upon the requirements of the position within the Family
• Be open to working at various sites and be able to travel as needed
• Knowledge and understanding of current trends and practices including Diocesan requirements
Desired Skills:
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, committees, parishioners and Family leaders.
• Understanding of the unique situation of these specific parish communities (e.g. size, cultural attributes, financial situation) that may require flexibility in order to fulfill Diocesan requirements and recommendations.
• Excellent time management skills including the ability to manage a calendar that includes each aspect of the Faith Formation Program.
• Evaluate and ensure adherence to Sacramental Guidelines and review compliance with Diocesan Guidelines and Canon Law
• Knowledge of requirements for receipt of the sacraments and the manner in which sacramental records are kept and manage same.
• Ability to evaluate and assess the work of Faith Formation within the Family, including preparation of quarterly reports to the Pastor/Administrator and Family leadership
• Manage compliance with Protecting God’s Children/VIRTUS program and other hiring practices recommended or required by the Diocese
Salary: $20/hr, 20 hours a week
