Position Summary
The PK8 Music Teacher is responsible for providing a joyful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate music education rooted in a Catholic worldview. This educator will cultivate students' musical skills through singing, movement, performance, and basic instrumental instruction. A key part of the role is preparing students to participate reverently and confidently in school liturgies as well as leading two major annual music eventsone in the fall and one in the spring.
The ideal candidate brings a passion for music education, strong classroom management, and the ability to help students grow artistically, spiritually, and academically. The ability to teach students to play an instrument, particularly violin, is highly desirable.
Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Plan and deliver high-quality PK8 music lessons that align with school standards and the Catholic mission.
- Teach foundational music concepts: rhythm, melody, harmony, notation, and music appreciation.
- Introduce students to vocal technique, choral singing, and liturgical music.
- Prepare students to sing confidently in school Masses throughout the year.
- Lead, organize, and direct two annual music programs (Fall & Spring).
- Provide opportunities for instrumental exploration; violin instruction is an added advantage.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners across multiple grade levels.
- Assess student progress through performance assessments, observation, and informal/formal evaluations.
Classroom Environment
- Create a welcoming, orderly, and faith-filled classroom rooted in Catholic virtues.
- Establish routines that foster respect, creativity, collaboration, and joyful music-making.
- Encourage student confidence through rehearsals, performances, and classroom activities.
Faith & Mission Integration
- Support the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Integrate prayer, virtues, and Catholic identity into classroom culture.
- Select and teach liturgical music appropriate for school Masses.
- Serve as a faith-filled role model for students.
Professional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with faculty to support school-wide events and liturgical celebrations.
- Communicate with parents regarding classroom activities, performances, and student progress.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and required trainings.
- Maintain accurate attendance, grades, and rehearsal/performance records.
- Use school technology platforms effectively (gradebook, communications, instructional tools).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field (preferred).
- Valid teaching certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Experience teaching music to children (PK8 preferred).
- Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy, music theory, and classroom performance preparation.
- Ability to teach beginning instrumental musicviolin experience ideal but not required.
- Commitment to the mission of Catholic education.
- Excellent communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
