Saint Viator High School, a Catholic, college-preparatory community, seeks a dedicated and student-centered School Counselor to join our Counseling Department. As an integral member of a collaborative team, the School Counselor spends the majority of their time in direct service to students, supporting their academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary development. In this role, you will serve as a trusted resource, fostering vital relationships between students, parents, faculty, and administration to uphold the mission and values of Saint Viator High School.
- Education: Master’s Degree (M.A./M.S./M.Ed.) in School Counseling.
- Licensure: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a School Counseling endorsement (Required).
- Certification: NCC, LPC, or LCPC credentials (Highly Preferred).
- Experience: Previous experience in a high school college-preparatory setting; familiarity with the ASCA National Model and data-informed practices.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with Maia Learning (or similar college/career platforms) and Student Information Systems.
- Core Competencies: Exceptional interpersonal skills, sound clinical judgment, and a strict commitment to student confidentiality.
- Provide individual and small-group counseling to support mental health, well-being, and crisis intervention.
- Empower students to develop resilience, coping skills, and ethical decision-making strategies.
- Identify and mitigate barriers to student success through targeted interventions and referrals to outside providers when necessary.
- Manage course selection, scheduling, and the development of comprehensive four-year academic plans.
- Monitor student progress and collaborate with faculty to implement effective study skills and organizational strategies.
- Interpret standardized testing data (ACT, SAT, PreACT) to guide academic planning and placement.
- Active participation in Student Support/Intervention teams to address diverse learning needs.
- Guide students and families through the college search, application, and financial aid processes.
- Facilitate programming and resources focused on career exploration, vocational interests, and alternative post-secondary pathways.
- Build and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives and feeder schools to support student transitions.
- Integrated Teamwork: Partner with the Administration, Scanlan Center (Learning Support), Dean’s Office, School Nurse, Campus Ministry, and Athletics.
- Program Development: Assist in the delivery of a comprehensive counseling curriculum aligned with ASCA standards.
- Community Engagement: Facilitate parent/guardian outreach and educational workshops.
- Faith-Based Commitment: Actively support the Catholic mission and Viatorian identity of the school in all professional interactions.

Working Environment:
- Flexible hours required, including nights and weekends, to meet the demands of retreats, meetings, and events.
- Engagement with students, families, and the broader community in a variety of settings.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone and keyboard; and reach with hands and arms. Moderate lifting is required.
