St. Patrick Center provides opportunities for self-sufficiency and dignity to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Individuals and families build permanent, positive change in their lives through safe and affordable housing, sound mental and physical health, and employment and financial stability.

Working collaboratively with individuals, businesses, government and other service providers, St. Patrick Center will end chronic homelessness in the St. Louis region through Housing First, an evidence-based practice that tells us to remove barriers, do intake and assessment early, move people into housing and offer them support to achieve their goals.

Position Summary

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, through our service line of St. Patrick Center, is hiring a Co-Occurring Disorders Specialist to join our Assertive Community Treatment Program. The specialist will provide treatment, rehabilitation, advocacy and case management services to program clients with severe and persistent mental illnesses and chemical dependency problems, provide consultation for ACT team regarding substance use and addiction, and provide direct clinical services to clients on individual and group basis in office and community settings, among other duties. This position works Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM.

Overview and Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive, ongoing assessments of program clients’ mental illness, substance abuse, physical health, housing status and other relevant needs.

• Complete DLA-20’s every six months on primary case load as required by DMH and BJC/administrative agent.

• Provide direct clinical services to clients on individual and group basis in office and in community settings, make appropriate changes in treatment plans to ensure client’s ability to cope with internal and external stresses and transport clients to appointments as scheduled.

• Refer clients to appropriate community agencies, assisting clients when needed.

• Act as liaison and consult with community agencies and program clients to maintain coordination in treatment process.

• Potentially facilitate stage-wise treatment substance abuse groups with emphasis on facilitating personal growth and development towards recovery and wellness.

• Coordinate with outside inpatient services to provide needed services to clients and establish linkage with outpatient treatment groups and other support networks.

• Collaborate with ACT team coworkers during daily and weekly staff meetings.

• Provide person-centered direct clinical services to clients on individual and group basis in office and in community settings, make appropriate changes in treatment plans to ensure clients’ ability to cope with internal and external stressors.

• Facilitate clients’ treatment planning with an emphasis on fostering personal growth and development towards recovery and wellness.

• Provide on-call crisis intervention in coordination with ACT team coworkers, covering nighttime hours, holidays and weekends.

• Maintain service line and BJC-BH client tracking systems and client files (including treatment plans), document client progress to maintain permanent record of client activity within 24-hour timeframe required by DMH and BJC/administrative agent.

• Responsible for ministry policy regarding work hours, building security and all written personnel standards.

• Ensure the care model by interacting with all other service line programs.

• Provide consultation and training for ACT team regarding substance abuse and addiction.

• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements

• Qualified Addictions Professional (Certified or Registered as a substance use professional by the Missouri Credentialing Board with one of the following credentials: CADC, CRADC, CRAADC, CCJP, CCDP, CCDDP-D, RADC, or RADC-P) OR a licensed or provisionally licensed Mental Health Professional with a minimum of 1 year experience working with individuals with substance use disorders required.

• Bachelor’s degree required.

• Master’s degree preferred.

• Motivational Interviewing, Use of the Harm Reduction Model and Clinical Application of Stages of Change/Treatment knowledge required.

• Drug test to be completed within 30 days of hire.

• Driver's license required (MO residents require a Class E), personal vehicle, and auto insurance required.

Skills and Competencies Required

• Understanding of mental illness and substance use disorders.

• Experience in counseling and case management/wrap-around services.

• Knowledge and understanding of community agencies.

• Knowledge of federal, state and agency policies of client confidentiality.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Detailed oriented.

• Well-versed in ethical issues in drug/alcohol counseling with counseling and crisis intervention expertise.

• Self-motivation due to the frequently autonomous nature of position.

• Respect for clients and coworkers and sensitive to cultural diversity.

• Ability to work with a team.

• Ability to walk up multiple flights of stairs in client’s homes.

• Willingness to conduct home visits and be around cigarette smoke and other unpleasant odors in client homes.

• Moderate computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
