The Head of Maintenance at Saint Paul’s Catholic Student Center is responsible for the upkeep,
cleanliness and maintenance of the Student Center and any other properties owned or affiliated with the
St. Paul’s University Catholic Foundation. The Head of Maintenance is a part-time position that reports to
the Director of Operations. The list below represents a broad overview of expectations and skills needed
for the role.
Responsibilities:
- Preventative maintenance – Regularly inspect and service building systems like HVAC, electrical panels, generators, plumbing fixtures, and fire safety equipment to prevent malfunction.
- Repair work – Address issues as they arise, including fixing minor electrical problems, leaky faucets, clogged drains, broken doors, and damaged walls.
- Basic carpentry and painting – Perform minor carpentry repairs like replacing trim, patching wood, and painting interior and exterior surfaces.
- Grounds maintenance – Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of outdoor areas. Ensure that the outdoor space owned and operated by Saint Paul’s is clear of snow and ice in winter months.
- Responding to work orders – Receive and prioritize maintenance requests, document repairs completed and communicate with occupants regarding maintenance issues.
- Maintain housing and apartments – Work with the Director of Housing to ensure any maintenance that needs to be done by Saint Paul’s owned or affiliated properties are completed in a timely manner.
- Equipment operation – Operate basic tools and equipment like ladders, power drills, wrenches, and cleaning supplies.
- Safety compliance – Adhere to safety procedures and reporting potential hazards.
- Maintenance budgeting – Work with and provide insight to the Director of Operations regarding the maintenance portion of the annual budget. Provide feedback on pricing for maintenance work that needs to be contracted out.
- Schedule major maintenance projects – Work closely with the Director of Operations to plan and scope major maintenance projects done at the Student Center.
- Vendor relations – Communicate with vendors when necessary and oversee the work being done by vendors in the Student Center. Arrange schedules for work to be completed by the vendors.
- Facilities inspection – Perform a thorough semi-annual inspection of facilities, grounds and equipment on a semi-annual basis.
- Maintenance records – Maintain a record of maintenance, repairs and improvements. Maintain documentation of all regular and semi-regular maintenance checks which need to be done.
- Supplies – Work with Director of Operations to ensure that all supplies necessary to maintain the building is kept in stock as needed.
Required Skills:
- Technical skills – Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and general building maintenance practices. Computer knowledge and competence is required for the technical software systems.
- Handyperson skills – Ability to perform minor repairs across various trades like carpentry, painting, and basic appliance repair.
- Problem-solving abilities – Diagnosing issues and determining appropriate solutions to repair problems efficiently.
- Physical ability – Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in various positions.
- Attention to detail – Completing tasks thoroughly and ensuring proper functioning of systems. Promote a welcoming environment and hospitable atmosphere in the Student Center.
