Position Summary: The Midlands Clean of Heart (COH) is a Program created and supported by Catholic Charities of the Midlands. COH is a bustling, faith-based, service-centered facility that provides a safe space for homeless and low-income individuals to have their basic needs of showers, laundry, clothing, food, and hygiene met. The facility is staffed by dedicated Volunteers from around the community.

The role calls for openly sharing one’s faith and prayer with co-workers, clients, volunteers, and the broader community in service to the mission of Catholic Charities. Candidates should have a deep personal relationship with Jesus Christ, be actively practicing their Catholic faith, and be in good standing with their local pastor. This witness to the Catholic faith—through both words and actions—is essential to fostering unity, compassion, and authentic Christian service in a multicultural and highly diverse environment.

Classification: Non-Exempt, Hourly – 20 hours per week

Reports To: Teresa Maybay, Site Administrator

Key Responsibilities:

First point of contact to greet and welcome clients, visitors, Donors, Volunteers, Community Partners
Assist clients by checking them in at arrival, scheduling for future appointments, and directing them appropriately through services
Monitors COH waiting room occupancy numbers throughout service times for safety and to keep the service flowing efficiently
Maintains security by following building access procedures and monitoring client activity during visit
Organizes and sorts all incoming mail according to Site
Distributes mail upon client’s request
Prepare Blessing Bags (hygiene, snack, lunch) as needed to start, and throughout the service day
Informs clients by providing community resources upon request
Keeps a safe and clean reception area by complying with procedures and guidelines
Supports CCM Site Administrator’s efforts by communicating COH needs and incidents
Maintain an even “temperature” in the room to encourage and allow a calm, safe environment for all
Contributes to CCM Team by performing any other related responsibilities as needed

Qualifications & Skills:

Demonstrated emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and well-developed interpersonal skills
Composure and resilience in managing client outbursts, confrontations, or potentially volatile situations with calmness and professionalism
Patience, compassion, and confidence when working with individuals experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges
Strong verbal communication and active listening abilities
High level of professionalism, organization, and adaptability in responding to the dynamic needs of clients and programs
Commitment to a client-centered and service-oriented approach
Ability to remain seated and focused for extended periods when performing administrative or client-support duties
Practicing Catholic in good standing

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: The requirements described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, and telephones. Valid driver’s license required. This position involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching above shoulders. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds to transport files or materials.
